From our founder

Capability, skills and confidence, built at scale.

I started AI New Zealand in 2017, well before ChatGPT. Since then we have advised thousands of New Zealand organisations, and the lesson keeps repeating: access to AI is the easy part. Using it well takes knowledge, practice and the confidence to question what it tells you.

Everyone has AI. The difference is you.

Knowing the rules you work inside, where these tools get things wrong, and what stays your job. That capability can't depend on who happens to be curious. It has to be built deliberately, for everyone, at scale. Our young people will start work in organisations where AI is already part of the job, so the best time to build it is before they get there.

That's why AI at Work Foundations is free for New Zealand secondary schools: the same course, the same assessment read by a person, and the same certificate as everyone else who takes it.

For schools

What a School account gives you.

Give your staff and senior students the same course everyone else takes, at no charge. A teacher or the principal opens one account for the school, and you decide who takes part.

A person assesses every final assessment

AI New Zealand assesses your staff. Staff who have completed the course can then be nominated to assess your students, using the same published standard and assessment steps as our own assessors.

Your school's own page

Your logo and colours, and a welcome message for your students. Share the link and they start from there.

Sign in with a school email

Staff and students on your school's email domain sign in with an 8-digit code we email them. There are no passwords to manage.

Your AI guidelines, applied

Upload your school's AI policy or guidelines. Once confirmed, it becomes an extra criterion in the final assessment, and students can read it in the course.

Facilitated groups

Staff who have completed the course can lead it with a group or a class, discussion first, at no charge.

The same certificate

Students and staff who pass earn the same verifiable certificate of completion from AI New Zealand as everyone else. It is not NCEA and carries no credits.

Who it suits

The course is written for people in work, about using AI well in their own work. It suits senior students best, around 16 and 17 years old. Your school decides which students take part, and can invite students of any age.

Teachers take it first: a teacher completes the course and passes the final assessment, which AI New Zealand assesses, before they can assess students or lead a group.

Teachers and principals

One account per school. Use an email address on your school's own domain, the one in the Ministry of Education's directory of schools. Nothing is set up until you enter the code we email you, and our team checks each school before it goes live.

What you learn.

AI at Work Foundations gets you ready to use AI well at work, before your first job or alongside it. You learn at your own pace, then write a final assessment on your own work that a person reads and decides.

What AI is, and where it gets things wrong

What these tools actually are, what they can reach, and how to check their work before you rely on it.

The rules you work inside

Privacy, confidential information and whose knowledge it is, as they apply in New Zealand workplaces.

What stays your job

What to hand to AI, what to keep, and what you sign off as your own.

Practical exercises on your own work

Short tasks you do on real work or study of your own, with feedback as you go.
